For over 30 years John Cairney has been recognised as the embodiment of Burns He has delivered toasts ”To the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns” or performed his Burns one man show in almost every country in the world. He is thus qualified to be a fair critic of orators and their speeches.
“In 2000, when I was the non speaking guest of the Milngavie Labour Club the Immortal Memory was proposed by Danny McCafferty. He spoke that night having just had a heart operation but there was no doubt his heart was still in the right place”
John Cairney went on to devote pages 218 –222 to the speech he heard that night, in his book “ Immortal Memories,” a compilation of toasts to the Bard as delivered at Burns Suppers around the world 1801-2001.
In his preface John Cairney states, “The purpose of this present book has been to gather into one volume the best speeches (from previous books) as well as those gathered from modern Burns writing and from my own researches to date so as to offer a wide and updated view of Burns to the contemporary reader.”
Inclusion in the book is high praise indeed coming from the man universally recognised as a Burns authority. It is from that perspective that I am offering my services as a Burns Speaker at any future events you may be organising
