I would like to hear the opinion of other members on the petition proposing the renaming of the airport at Prestwick in Ayrshire, South West Scotland as

"The Robert Burns International Airport"

As you probably know, the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is due to open in September 2010, this will be yet another attraction within Burns Corridor: Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire, which should be promoted to its full potential.  The Robert Burns International Airport would be a monumental advertisement for potential visitors to the Land of Burns, his inns, his homes, his loves, his rivers and glens. It would give the people who live within Burns Corridor a much needed boost to their moral. This is a corridor with numerous iconic figures from Scotland's past and we need to provide incentives and information to the masses who do not know what Ayrshire & Dumfriesshire have to offer.

The airport should be a beacon, showing people the way.

Robert Burns voted Greatest Scot

STV's Homecoming search for The Greatest Scot culminates in Robert Burns, in his 250th anniversary year.

"So is that it?

What happens now?

How about asking for the renaming of the airport at Prestwick, which is 5 miles from Robert Burns place of birth in Alloway, as "The Robert Burns International Airport" like we do every year at this time. Let's go the full hog this time!

http://www.gopetition.com/...rport.html And when you're talking about innovation and patriots just remember that a great number of these men and women on the Icon List came from within 50 miles of The Robert Burns International Airport.

When they eventually change the name to The Robert Burns International Airport they will take down that terrible

"Pure Dead Brilliant"

slogan and replace it with......

- "There's a hand" -

from Auld Lang Syne.

Cheers, Geoff

Keep on signing

Is the Scottish Government playing at tourism?

I came across a Scottish Government discussion concerning Homecoming Scotland:

Official Report 29 November 2007

Col 3875

Scottish Parliament

Thursday 29 November 2007

[THE PRESIDING OFFICER opened the meeting at 09:15]

Tourism

At 10:50 they finally mentioned Burns Corridor: Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire:

At the time of the launch, Patricia Ferguson, who was then the responsible minister, made it clear that the Burns World Federation would play a crucial role in the event, particularly in the south-west of Scotland—not only in Ayrshire, but in Dumfries, which is Elaine Murray's part of the world. That is an important element of the event. Will the minister confirm that the Government will continue to provide funding to that organisation?

Finally, I ask the minister to ensure that all the organisations in Burns country that want to participate in 2009 can access the funding. Organisations have expressed concern at the tightness of the timescale for making funding applications; I understand that they have to submit completed applications in February. As the minister will appreciate, the January period is a particularly busy one for Ayrshire. Some of the Burns organisations may find it difficult to get the resources in place to submit their application on time. I ask the minister to make available some of his senior officials to come to Ayrshire in my constituency to work with those organisations. That will ensure that we have a programme of events in and around Burns country to which people will want to come; perhaps more important, once they have come there they will want to return.

==============================================

I was a tourism student at the time and that is the only reason I knew about the Homecoming. I stay in the centre of Burns Corridor and I had to explain to locals what it was all about.

How do we go about getting a couple of fields to have the image of Robert Burns on them. These fields need to be on the flightpath to Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire, within Burns Corridor. What a sight, flying into The Robert Burns International and seeing the Bard in one of his fields beside the Nith at Ellisland or Mossgiel.

Great promotion for a movie.

Is there any way of having the image of Robert Burns appear in fields on the Prestwick Airport flightpath? His famous silhouette would be perfect in a field next to Mossgiel or Ellisland.

Samples of some very intricate artwork:

The face of Robert Burns would be a snip.

I have just posted this comment on Pictures Chat site. Whether they show it or not I don't know.

I would have loved to have seen the faces of passengers flying into the Robert Burns International Airport, Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland as they looked down and saw the face of Robert Burns looking up at them from an Ayrshire field during his 250th anniversary year.

That didn’t happen though. Maybe this year eh?

Robert Burns is our national Bard, known internationally as our national Bard.

If the people of Scotland use these two words "Burns International" when talking about the Ayrshire airport, it will become "Burns International".  Let it be "commonly known" as "Burns International".

It is our airport, our decission on what we call it.

"Robert Burns History – A Global Icon

We need the rantin’ rovin’ rebel whose sharp tongue and lightning wit hold up a mirror to our souls and find within them, despite their prurience or pomposity, an essential humanity that can reach out and connect across the world. Despite all of our differences and despite all that separates, Burns unites; encouraging us, in his most famous song to offer our hands to each other and ‘tak a cup of kindness, yet.’

Just as the words of Auld Lang Syne have permeated our global consciousness, from It’s a Wonderful Life to When Harry met Sally, Robert Burns has become a global icon for Scotland. Yet with icons come myths and Burns has been subject to many. The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum will provide a touchstone for people to connect with the man behind the myth. Nowhere else will they be able to get as close to the reality of the poet’s life and work, often in its roughest, manuscript form and within the landscape that inspired him."

Can you imagine flying over Burns Corridor, looking down and seeing the large silhouette of Robert Burns in a green field. As you proceed towards his Ayrshire airport it will make you realise that these are Burns' ; rivers, glens, ferms and howffs. His inspiration: his life.
