Hi RT Clan,

Some news from our Honorary Member David Sibbald and Member Peigi McCann, on their contribution to the special Burns Chronicle Edition 2009.

In February of 2010 the World Burns Federation will be publishing a special 250th anniversary limited edition of the "Burns Chronicle." Over 700 pages long, the edition will include details of many of the events that took place in 2009. Contributors will include clubs, academics and individuals.

One of the articles which will be included in the anniversary edition will be

"The Botany of Robert Burns" by RT Burns Honorary Member, David Sibbald and, Peggy Edwards. The article consists of a series of Peggy's botanical

illustrations of plants mentioned by Burns accompanied by analysis of the relevant poems by David. According to David, Robert Burns and nature

"are inextricably linked...His knowledge of the flora and fauna of Scotland

was vast. He effortlessly wove wildflowers, birds and trees into his poetic

works. Sometimes they set the scene, at others they were allegorical, and were often used to heighten awareness of grief or joy. He was certainly an advocate in sensing Nature in harmony with mankind and was one of our first conservationists."

Each analysis is followed by a brief description of the plant. Plants include Common Haricap Moss, Scottish Harebell, Dog Rose, Scots Pine, a Red Red Rose, the Hawthorn and the National Flower of Scotl

and, the Common Thistle.
